i’m noticing a couple of new-to-me vegan annoyances; you basically can’t eat in anyone’s home for fear of creating some kind of awkward ruckus these days….
tonight the host brought out a couple different things with meat/dairy/whatever in them; then has to loudly point out whether i can (or can’t) eat these things. another guest then has to chime in (joking now) ‘this one’s for you, if you hate animals’…..and in response i’m supposed to what? laugh? get annoyed? try to make everyone comfortable? i wind up going ‘oh hey, whatever…’ but honestly i feel put out by it. i know two of the women present are actively trying to lose weight; can you imagine if i ran a commentary on their food choices? jesus christ.
then twice in the past short while i’ve been asked point blank if i’m ‘vegan for ethical reasons’—both times i said ‘yes’ because it’s true, but i think a better answer might be ‘why, can you think of a better reason?’; leading the inquisitor to say ‘health’ or ‘environment’ or some shit, then i could say ‘yeah those are good reasons too’.
it’s a loaded question though because clearly the implication is i’m questioning YOUR ethics, and god knows i do NOT want to hear about THOSE……
